FernField

Brand & digital studio

We build the parts of a brand that people actually meet.

Fern Field is a small studio working with founder-led companies on identity, websites and campaign systems — the practical, visible work that makes a young company feel settled and easy to trust.

Independent since the beginning — one team, no hand-offs

Identity · Websites · Campaign systems · Editorial design

Capabilities

Four kinds of work, run by the same people who pitched them.

Most projects start in one of these and grow into another. Each engagement is scoped as a fixed piece of work with a named lead, so you always know who is holding it.

01 — Identity

Names, marks and the rules that keep them steady

We work from how you actually talk about the company, not from a mood board. The result is a mark, a type system and a written voice that your team can apply without calling us every time.

  • Positioning workshop
  • Logotype & marks
  • Type & colour system
  • Brand guide

02 — Websites

Sites that load fast and read clearly on a phone

Structure first, then design, then build. We write the page in plain terms with you before anything is drawn, which is usually where the hard decisions get made and the timeline gets saved.

  • Content structure
  • Design system
  • Front-end build
  • CMS handover

03 — Campaigns

A launch kit your team can keep running

One idea, built out into the formats you need and documented so the next round does not start from zero. We hand over working files and a short guide on when to use what.

  • Concept & messaging
  • Art direction
  • Social & display kit
  • Template library

04 — Editorial

Reports, decks and print that hold attention

For the long documents that carry weight — an annual review, a funding deck, a printed piece. We edit as we design, so the pages get shorter and sharper rather than merely prettier.

  • Editing & sequencing
  • Layout systems
  • Illustration & charts
  • Print production

Marlow & Reed

A rebuilt identity and type system for a small publisher, delivered with a guide short enough that the two-person team actually uses it.

Understory

A launch system — messaging, art direction and a template library — that the in-house team has been running on their own since handover.

How we work

A short, visible process with no surprise stages.

Every project runs on the same four beats. You get a written scope before we begin and a standing check-in each week, so nothing lands as a reveal.

01

Listen

A working session with the people who know the company best, then a written summary of what we heard and where we disagree.

02

Frame

Scope, sequence and a fixed price. We name what is in, what is out and what we would do next if budget allows.

03

Make

Design and build in visible increments, reviewed weekly. Feedback in one place, decisions written down as we go.

04

Hand over

Files, guidance and a walkthrough with your team, plus a settling-in period for the small fixes that always appear.

The studio

Small on purpose, and staying that way.

Fern Field is a compact team of designers, writers and one very patient front-end developer. The people you meet in the first call are the people who do the work.

We take on a handful of projects at a time. That limits how much we can promise, but it means a project never gets parked behind something larger, and it keeps our answers honest when something is going slowly.

Most engagements run six to twelve weeks. Some clients stay on a light monthly arrangement afterwards for the steady trickle of work that follows a launch — we are happy either way.

Questions

The things people ask before they write in.

How much does a project cost?

It depends on scope, so we quote per project rather than publishing a rate card. Tell us roughly what you have in mind and what you are working with, and we will say plainly whether it fits before either of us spends a lot of time on it.

When could you start?

We book a few weeks ahead. If your timing is tight, say so in your enquiry — occasionally a slot opens up, and if it does not, we would rather tell you early than hold you waiting.

Do you work with in-house teams?

Often. We can lead the work outright or sit alongside an internal designer or marketer, taking the parts they do not have time for. Either way we agree who owns which decision at the start.

Can you work remotely?

Yes — most of our projects run remotely with a weekly call and a shared review space. We will come to you for kick-off or a workshop when the project genuinely benefits from being in a room together.

What happens after handover?

You get working files, a written guide and a walkthrough with your team. Small adjustments in the weeks after launch are included, and we can stay on for ongoing work if you want us to.

Start a project

Tell us what you are working on.

A few lines is plenty. We read every enquiry ourselves and reply with either a straight answer or a suggested time to talk it through.

Not sure it is a fit? Write in anyway. If it is not our kind of work we will say so quickly, and point you somewhere more useful where we can.

Studio hours are Monday to Friday. Enquiries sent over a weekend are picked up on the next working day.

We only use what you send here to reply to your enquiry.
